Tour Experience
What to expect on your tour:
Each day during a chase tour is different. We plan our day based on the current weather conditions. We will travel wherever the weather takes us, with an average tour covering several states. At the end of each day, we will decide where to stay. We do our best to choose better than average, clean, safe lodging. We want our guests to feel comfortable throughout their tour.

Mornings:
The hotel will provide a continental breakfast for you each morning. At our scheduled meeting time for that day, we will hold a briefing in the lobby of the hotel. We will go over the mornings newest weather model runs and discuss the plan for the day. After this, we will load everything into the vehicle and head out to our decided target area. This could be anywhere from under an hour to 8 hours away. We try to make a gas station stop before we head out so you are able to stock up on snacks and anything else you may need.
Afternoons:
Our goal during the afternoon is to get into position for ensuing thunderstorm development. We will try to incorporate a sit down lunch stop, but this is dependent on how far away we are from our target area and the current weather conditions. We aim to be there before the storm even develops so you are able to witness the entire storm cycle. There will be days we make a fast food stop for a lunch on the go. If there is no severe weather to chase, we will explore local attractions.
Evenings:
Late afternoon and evening is prime time for storm development. Dinners will typically be late during a chase day. If it is not a chase day, we will find a nice place to have a sit down dinner. After dinner, we head to our hotel for the night. Once we are checked in, we will let you know what time we will be meeting in the lobby for our morning briefing.

What we do if there is no severe weather:
Even during ‘peak’ severe weather season, it is possible not to have any severe weather to chase. During this time, we know the best places in tornado alley to explore. We have been to: The ‘Twister’ Museum in Wakita, OK, Yellowstone National Park, Mount Rushmore, the Badlands of South Dakota, Wind Cave National Park, the UFO Museum in Roswell, NM, the Alamo in San Antonio, TX, Palo Duro Canyon, the Royal Gorge in Colorado, and the list goes on and on. All fees to National and State Parks and entrance fees to attractions are paid for by Twisted Sky Tours. We also like to find local, unique places to eat. So even though there may be a “down day”, we will make sure you still have a good time. A storm chase tour with Twisted Sky Tours is like having two vacations in one. Each day brings new adventures! |
What you should bring on your tour:
Because luggage space is limited, we ask each guest bring a small/medium sized suitcase and a small personal bag such as a purse or backpack to keep with you in your seat. You should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions. It is possible to have temperature changes in a day going from 60°F (15°C) to 90°F (32°C), so clothing that can be layered works well. We also recommend you bring along a light rain jacket. Also, feel free to bring along your own camera and video camera so you can capture your storm chase adventure. Plan on spending many hours in the vehicle as we travel between target areas, and we are prepared. These are times you can ask us questions, we love to share our weather knowledge and stories with you. We also have a variety of games in the van to keep everyone entertained. You can also bring along your iPod, iPad, a good book, etc. |
Transportation during the tour:
Each tour will have 2 guides and a maximum of 6 guests. Depending on the number of guests on a tour, we will choose a vehicle that provides the best guest experience. There are outlets available in the vehicle, so you are able to keep your electronics up and running. We will always be equipped with the latest radar and navigation software so we can get you, our guest, into the best and safest location to view mother nature's power. All vehicles are up to safety standards and are fully insured.
